Angel Blue
The 2020 recipient of the Metropolitan Opera’s Beverly Sills Artist Award, Los Angeles–born soprano Angel Blue has quickly become one of the world’s most in-demand opera singers. She made her Met debut in 2017 as Mimì in La Bohème and returned a year later as Musetta in that same opera. In 2019–2020, she starred as Bess in the landmark new staging of the Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, and during the company’s closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she performed in the 2020 Met Stars Live in Concert New Year’s Eve Gala.
This season at the Met, Ms. Blue appears as Destiny/Loneliness/Greta in the historic company premiere of Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones and reprises her celebrated portrayal of Bess. Elsewhere, she sings Mimì at the Bavarian State Opera, Marguerite in Faust at the Opéra de Paris, and Violetta in La Traviata at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; in addition, she joins the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and The Philadelphia Orchestra on the concert stage.
In recent seasons, Ms. Blue has sung Mimì in Hamburg, Dresden, and at the Canadian Opera Company; the title role of Tosca in Aix-en-Provence; Violetta at La Scala and in Winnipeg; Bess at Seattle Opera; and Liù in Turandot at San Diego Opera. She has appeared at the Vienna State Opera, English National Opera, LA Opera, San Francisco Opera, Oper Frankfurt, Edinburgh International Festival, and with the Berliner Philharmoniker, London and Israel philharmonic orchestras, Munich Philharmonic, and Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, among others. Alongside her musical activities, she is dedicated to the support of inner-city youth and is the founder of the nonprofit organization Sylvia’s Kids Foundation, which offers scholarships to help American teenagers continue their studies once they have completed high school.
