Live from Carnegie Hall: Sondheim—A Celebration at Carnegie Hall

Today, "Live from Carnegie Hall" focuses on a spectacular Carnegie Hall gala benefit which celebrated the Hall and Stephen Sondheim, a man The New York Times dubbed "the greatest and perhaps best-known artist in the American musical theatre."

Artist: Various Artists
Album: Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall
Date Recorded: June 10, 1992
Fun Fact: Although it was more than a year in the planning, Stephen Sondheim did not see any of the show before attending on the night.

With The New York Pops celebrating Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday in Carnegie Hall on November 18, we recall the night, nearly two decades ago, when some of the biggest names in musical theater—including Liza Minnelli, Patti LuPone, Glenn Close, Bernadette Peters, and Betty Buckley—gathered for a gala to benefit Carnegie Hall and honor Sondheim and his music.

According to David Thompson's liner notes, the highlight of the evening "was the moment Sondheim walked onto the stage of Carnegie Hall. For the first time the audience could truly show their appreciation for a man who has made such an enormous contribution to the world of music. All decorum, all restraint was put aside, and the audience stood and roared. The ovation was deafening. It was a very public display of affection for a very private man."
