The Indigo Girls Reflect: Emily Saliers

The Indigo Girls recently brought the legendary folk-rock show they've been honing since the mid-1980s to Zankel Hall. In guest blog posts, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers share their thoughts on making their Carnegie Hall debut.

For me, very few professional experiences have rivaled turning the corner down a bustling New York City street and entering the backstage door to Carnegie Hall for an imminent performance. There are many storied venues in NYC, but Carnegie Hall has that special je ne sais quoi, and the intimate Zankel Hall proved to be all that we were excited about before we even arrived. The room was intimate but not intimidating, and the New York crowd was, as always, teeming with enthusiasm and spirit and singing voices.

It was a thrill to stand on the stage and be in the building where so many incredible musicians have performed. The thrill of New York is still alive in my heart: the history, the indefatigable audiences, the exchange of energy, the gift of art. I will always remember calling home, after a wonderful night in Zankel, and saying, "Dad, we played Carnegie Hall!!"
