Live From Carnegie Hall: A Carnegie Hall Christmas

This week, Live from Carnegie Hall celebrates Christmas with a star-studded concert recording from 1991.

Album: A Carnegie Hall Christmas
Artists: Kathleen Battle, Soprano; Frederica von Stade, Mezzo-soprano; Wynton Marsalis, Trumpet; The Orchestra of St. Luke's; André Previn, Conductor/Piano; Nancy Allen, Harp; The American Boychoir, James Litton, Music Director; The Christmas Concert Chorus, Robert De Cormier, Director; and The Wynton Marsalis Septet.
Date Recorded: December 8, 1991
Fun Fact: PBS filmed the concert and broadcast it, fully edited, just three days later.

For this Christmas concert, featuring some of the biggest names in classical and jazz music, the Carnegie Hall stage was covered with three winter-themed panels, designed by theatrical set-designers John Michael Deegan and Sarah Conly, and inspired by Russian lacquer boxes.

This was a night of multiple musical influences—Ms. Battle, dressed in red, and Ms. von Stade, in red, wove a thread from Sophie and Octavian's love duet from Der Rosenkavalier into an otherwise traditional rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas; the Wynton Marsalis Septet performed jazzed-up versions of Winter Wonderland and Joy to the World; while Mary's Boy Child brought a Caribbean feel to this Carnegie Hall Christmas.
