Inspired by the grandeur of the sea, American composer Frank Ticheli’s The Shore weaves a score set to David St. John’s poetry in which the sea is a metaphor for life’s journey. The poetry provides a palette of musical moods evoked by the sea. In Songs of The Fleet, Charles Villiers Stanford deploys his harmonic inventiveness and folk-like melodies to depict the fleet waking at sunrise, ready to set sail, and motionless at dusk.
