The Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) recently completed a monumental recording cycle of Shostakovich’s complete symphonies, earning endless critical praise along the way (“scandalously successful,” wrote London’s The Times; “the most electrifying ... in half a century,” said Gramophone). This evening’s program features Symphony No. 11—a musical depiction of 1905’s Russian Revolution—which earned Nelsons and the BSO one of the multiple Grammy Awards (Best Orchestral Performance) they received throughout the project. Adding to the excitement is Yo-Yo Ma as soloist in Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto, a famously demanding piece that was an early landmark in Ma’s own recording career.
