Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter is a musical phenomenon. For 47 years, the virtuoso has been a fixture in the world’s major concert halls, making her mark as a soloist, mentor, collaborator, humanitarian, and visionary artist. A prolific recording artist with four Grammy Awards, she is equally committed to the performance of the traditional violin catalog and to the expansion of the repertoire. To date, she has given world premieres of 31 works written for her by such distinguished composers as Thomas Adès, Unsuk Chin, Sebastian Currier, Henri Dutilleux, Sofia Gubaidulina, Witold Lutosławski, Norbert Moret, Krzysztof Penderecki, André Previn, Wolfgang Rihm, Jörg Widmann, and John Williams.
In 2023—the year she turns 60—Ms. Mutter presents concerts that reflect both her versatility and her peerless rank in the world of classical music. Numerous compositions dedicated to her fill her calendar; in many countries, these works will be programmed for the first time. At the beginning of the year, Ms. Mutter and the Mutter Virtuosi tour Iceland, the US, and Canada. Two further tours this summer take them through Europe.
In the US, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Andris Nelsons, Ms. Mutter performs Thomas Adès’s Air, a work she co-commissioned and premiered at the Lucerne Festival in 2022 with the composer conducting. A European chamber music tour in May and June will feature her with pianist Lambert Orkis and cellist Maximilian Hornung in performances of works by Brahms, Clara Schumann, Beethoven, and Sebastian Currier.
Another musical focus in 2023 is the work of John Williams. Ms. Mutter will perform his Violin Concerto No. 2 (dedicated to her) and a selection of virtuoso adaptations of film scores (created for her) in Australia, Europe, and the US, with the American performances being conducted by the composer.
Ms. Mutter concludes her 60th birthday year performing Penderecki’s Violin Concerto No. 2, “Metamorphosen,” (dedicated to her) in honor of the 90th birthday of the composer, who passed away in 2020. She will play the work in Poland and Israel with the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra under Andrey Boreyko.
Ms. Mutter has been awarded the German Grand Order of Merit, the French Medal of the Legion of Honour, the Bavarian Order of Merit, the Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria, and an honorary doctorate from the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Kraków. She has been recognized around the world for her contribution to the arts, culture, social causes, and leadership.
