Carnegie Hall Presents

The Philadelphia Orchestra

Tuesday, October 17, 2023 8 PM Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage
Yannick Nézet-Séguin by Todd Rosenberg
Rachmaninoff’s favorite ensemble was The Philadelphia Orchestra; “the greatest orchestra in the world,” he called it. In this concert, the orchestra performs two of his most important pieces, including his last major work: Symphonic Dances. It was dedicated to The Philadelphia Orchestra, and the ensemble played its premiere in January 1941, just days before it performed the New York premiere at Carnegie Hall. His Second Symphony, a much earlier creation, was an enduring favorite that Rachmaninoff conducted with The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1909 and which received its US premiere here on this stage. The program opens with the brisk, propulsive excitement of Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Higdon’s Fanfare Ritmico.

Over the past 20 years, The Philadelphia Orchestra has performed the music of Jennifer Higdon more frequently than that of any other living composer. Her energetic Fanfare Ritmico, which in the composer’s words “celebrates the rhythm and speed (tempo) of life,” is a perfect, celebratory way to open tonight’s concert.

Sergei Rachmaninoff also enjoyed a long and extraordinarily fruitful relationship with the orchestra, which performed, premiered, and recorded many of his pieces. He often said that it was his ideal ensemble, the sound he heard in his mind when he composed. Next on the program we hear his brilliant Symphonic Dances, his final composition, which premiered in Philadelphia in 1941.

Rachmaninoff first led The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1909 with his inaugural tour to America when he conducted his recently finished Second Symphony. The relatively early work still dates from his Russian period, before he left for the West soon after the 1917 Revolution. The symphony brought him welcome success and confidence after the dispiriting failure of his First Symphony nearly a decade earlier.
