Osmo Vänskä by Lisa-Marie Mazzucco, Isabelle Faust by Felix Broede
Osmo Vänskä conducts Orchestra of St. Luke’s in Mozart’s dramatic Symphony No. 40—one of only two symphonies that Mozart wrote in a minor key. Esteemed German violinist Isabelle Faust makes her Orchestra of St. Luke’s debut with Brahms’s towering Violin Concerto, a thrilling work that, despite its technical demands, never sacrifices substance for flash. Faust’s “expressively searching and introspective” (The Guardian) interpretation allows listeners to experience the work in all its dynamic beauty.

Conductor Osmo Vänskä and Orchestra of St. Luke’s perform favorites by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johannes Brahms on this program of orchestral masterpieces. Composed in 1788, Mozart’s final three symphonies—No. 39 in E-flat Major, No. 40 in G Minor, and No. 41 in C Major (nicknamed “Jupiter”)—remain pillars of the repertoire. One of only two symphonies Mozart wrote in a minor key, the Symphony No. 40 in G Minor provides a fascinating snapshot into the final years of the composer’s life. Classical conventions are elevated by elegant innovation in this score in true Mozartian fashion. Violinist Isabelle Faust then takes the stage for Brahms’s Violin Concerto in D Major, originally written for Joseph Joachim, one of the great violin virtuosos of the 19th century. Full of élan and panache, the concerto abounds with Brahmsian grandeur and delight.
