Chopin’s combination of bravura technique and poetic feeling defined a new school of Romantic pianism in the mid 19th century. The English critic Henry Chorley likened his “insinuating and gossamer” touch to “the wild and softened discords of the Aeolian harp.” Chopin’s wizardry is captivatingly displayed in the 27 etudes he composed during the late 1820s and 1830s, when he was at the peak of his powers as a performer. Much more than dry pedagogical exercises, Chopin’s concert etudes combine depth of expression with a pathbreaking exploration of keyboard technique. No less a virtuoso than Mendelssohn hailed his Polish-born contemporary as “a second Paganini, doing entirely new things, and all sorts of impossibilities which one never thought could be done.”
