Yannick Nézet-Séguin brings the Orchestre Métropolitain—an ensemble he grew up with and has led for nearly 25 years—from Montréal to New York. This evening’s concert marks the last stop on the orchestra’s second US tour as well as its second performance at Carnegie Hall, following its successful concert in 2019.

To open the concert, the orchestra performs
Controlled Burn by Canadian Cree composer Cris Derksen. Inspired by a traditional practice that protects land while limiting the spread of forest fires, Derksen’s timely composition honors Indigenous people’s relationship with and respect for nature.

Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 showcases the talent of Canadian prodigy Tony Siqi Yun, the 2019 China International Music Competition’s first prizewinner. Mr. Yun’s career has gotten off to a brilliant start, and this evening’s performance marks his Carnegie Hall debut.

The concert concludes with Sibelius’s stunning Symphony No. 2. Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Orchestre Métropolitain began to record all of Sibelius’s symphonies in 2018. According to the conductor, the ensemble draws on the similarities between Scandinavian and Canadian landscapes to perform the Finnish composer’s work. “I’ve always felt a natural affinity for Sibelius’s music,” he says. “Playing his work is like bringing nature to life, and as Quebecers, our performance is inspired by our own northern environment.”
