Dover Quartet by Roy Cox, Leif Ove Andsnes by Özgür Albayrak
The Dover Quartet adds to its reputation for collaborations that highlight the unique artistry of both the ensemble and today’s leading soloists. They open the program with the shimmering, single-movement La oración del torero (“The Bullfighter’s Prayer”). Sublime pianist Leif Ove Andsnes then joins the ensemble in the great Hungarian composer Ernő Dohnányi’s Second Piano Quintet—which has never before been performed on this stage—as well as Brahms’s Piano Quintet, one of chamber music’s most beloved and thrilling pieces.

At a Glance

TURINA  La oración del torero, Op. 34

Originally scored for four lutes, Turina’s short, single-movement string quartet evokes the quiet devotion of a bullfighter praying in a private chapel before entering the ring, while the crowd outside boisterously awaits his appearance.

DOHNÁNYI  Piano Quintet No. 2 in E-flat Minor, Op. 26

Capitalizing on the success of his First Piano Quintet, written when he was just 18, Dohnányi composed a sequel in the early months of World War I. Darkly atmospheric and intricately constructed, the Quintet in E-flat Minor reflects the Hungarian’s virtuosity as a pianist and the influence of contemporary composers like R. Strauss and Schoenberg.

BRAHMS  Piano Quintet in F Minor, Op. 34

Originally conceived as a string quintet and later adapted for two pianos, Brahms’s masterpiece represents a near-perfect marriage of keyboard and strings. Only after Clara Schumann observed that the music was “so full of ideas” that a full orchestra was needed to do it justice did Brahms recast it as a piano quintet. In this form, the musicologist Sir Donald Francis Tovey wrote, “the rhythmic incisiveness of the piano is happily combined with the singing powers of the bowed instruments.”
