Presented by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, this immersive event is co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall and Minnesota Opera and features an international cohort of artists and storytellers who invite the audience to co-create this colorful, musical experience together.


PROGRAM UPDATE SERGEI BABAYAN, Piano Thursday, November 2, 2023at 7:30 PM (Zankel Hall) Returning to Carnegie Hall following acclaimed duo-recitals in 2018 and 2019 with his protégé, Daniil Trifonov, veteran pianist Sergei Babayan offers a program of Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Schumann, and Vladimir Ryabov’s Fantasia in C Minor. The second half of the concert now features a series of songs by Schubert, popularly transcribed for solo piano by Liszt, and Robert Schumann’s dramatic and many-faceted Kreisleriana, one of the composer's favorite works. Schubert’s Piano Sonata in G Major, D. 894, is no longer on the program.


LEA DESANDRE, Mezzo-Soprano THOMAS DUNFORD, Lute Thursday, November 2, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Weill Recital Hall) “One of today’s most exciting voices in early music performance” (The New York Times), rising star vocalist Lea Desandre is joined by lutist Thomas Dunford for this intimate duo-recital program featuring works by Monteverdi, Frescobaldi, Kapsberger, Dalza, Handel, and Merula.


KRONOS QUARTET: FIVE DECADES Friday, November 3, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Kronos Quartet celebrates its 50th anniversary joined by a once-in-a-lifetime lineup of guest artists and ensembles including Ariel Aberg-Riger, Laurie Anderson, Jake Blount, Peni Candra Rini, Brian Carpenter, Jacob Garchik, Soo Yeon Lyuh, Tanya Tagaq, Wu Man, Aizuri Quartet, Attacca Quartet, Bang on a Can All-Stars, and Sō Percussion, with additional artists to be announced. This special concert will include a short film by award-winning documentarian Sam Green; the New York premieres of Carnegie Hall co-commissioned works by Michael Gordon and Gabriella Smith; and an extraordinary new “Sunrise Jam” version of Terry Riley’s Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector for 50 musicians.


SHEKU KANNEH-MASON, Cello Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Weill Recital Hall) Cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason returns in a solo recital following multiple sold-out Carnegie Hall performances alongside his sister, Isata. Kanneh-Mason performs New York premieres of new works by two next-generation composers from the United Kingdom, Gwilym Simcock and Edmund Finnis, which both received world premieres by Kanneh-Mason at London’s Royal Academy of Music. He also performs the New York premiere of Leo Brouwer’s Sonata No. 2 for Solo Cello and cello suites by J. S. Bach, Britten, and Cassadó.


NOVEMBER 1918: THE GREAT WAR AND THE GREAT GATSBY Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Historian John Monsky returns for a powerful Veterans Day performance titled November 1918: The Great War and the Great Gatsby with celebrated Broadway vocalists joining Orchestra of St. Luke’s for music from the era. Monsky applies his signature blend of meticulously researched history and rare archival film and photography to create a fascinating exploration of World War I in a program that includes works from James Resse Europe to Irving Berlin.


AMERICAN COMPOSERS ORCHESTRA Thursday, November 9, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Zankel Hall) For the first of American Composers Orchestra’s two performances at Carnegie Hall this season, Vimbayi Kaziboni conducts world premieres of new works by George Lewis, Jack Hughes, and Guillermo Klein; Nina C. Young’s Out of whose womb came the ice (co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall); and the New York premiere of Augusta Read Thomas’s Sun Dance—In memoriam Oliver Knussen. The program features baritone Sidney Outlaw and video design by R. Luke Dubois.


THE MET ORCHESTRA CHAMBER ENSEMBLE Thursday, November 9, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Weill Recital Hall) Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts The Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble in its first concert of the season. Mr. Nézet-Séguin leads the ensemble in a program of R. Strauss, Copland, Gabriela Lena Frank’s Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout for String Quartet, and the world premiere of Santos Cota’s Elegía in its original instrumentation for English Horn, Bassoon, and Strings.


WELL-BEING CONCERT: SARAH ELIZABETH CHARLES JARRETT CHERNER Saturday, November 11, 2023 at 5:00 PM (Resnick Education Wing) Be uplifted by an intimate and open-hearted Well-Being Concert by vocalist Sarah Elizabeth Charles and pianist Jarrett Cherner, which will include a live performance and a communal exploration of self-care and mindfulness. An acclaimed composer and singer, Charles is a recent audience favorite across several of Carnegie Hall’s education, enrichment, and community engagement programs. In Cherner, she finds an ideal musical partner whose emotionally rich piano playing beautifully complements her multi-layered vocals. The duo’s superb debut project—Tone—touches on themes embedded in “being kind to and loving oneself”—and then sharing that loving-kindness outward into the world. Audience members can choose from a variety of casual and comfortable seating options, with mats, cushions, and chairs all available on a first-come, first-served basis.


MAXIM VENGEROV, Violin POLINA OSETINSKAYA, Piano Sunday, November 12, 2023 at 2:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Violinist Maxim Vengerov and pianist Polina Osetinskaya return to Carnegie Hall presenting Clara Schumann’s rarely performed Three Romances, Op. 22; Brahm’s Scherzo from “FAE” Sonata; Robert Schumann’s Violin Sonata No. 3 in A Minor; and works by Prokofiev.


SCHAGHAJEGH NOSRATI, Piano Monday, November 13, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Weill Recital Hall) Pianist Schaghajegh Nosrati makes her debut in Weill Recital Hall, performing J. S. Bach’s Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 903; Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 15 in D Major, Op. 28, “Pastoral”; Haydn’s Fantasia in C Major; and Alkan’s Symphony for Solo Piano from 12 Etudes in All the Minor Keys, Op. 39.


SIR BRYN TERFEL, Bass-Baritone Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Celebrated baritone Sir Bryn Terfel returns to the Hall in recital for the first time since 2010 joined by pianist Annabel Thwaite and Terfel’s wife, harpist Hannah Stone, performing songs by Finzi, Novello, Schubert, Guridi, Debussy, R. Schumann, Liszt, and traditional Welsh folk songs.


STANDARD TIME WITH MICHAEL FEINSTEIN Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Zankel Hall) Singer-songwriter Michael Feinstein returns for the first of three concerts this season, celebrating the Great American Songbook and Broadway with his suave vocalism, charismatic stage presence, and celebrated guest artists. For the first of Feinstein’s concerts, he presents a program titled Where Do You Start: Michael Feinstein's Greatest Hits.


SIR ANDRÁS SCHIFF, Piano Thursday, November 16, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Pianist Sir András Schiff returns for the first time since 2019 with a program to be announced.


THE NEW YORK POPS Friday, November 17, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Tony Award winners Sutton Foster and Kelli O’Hara join Music Director Steven Reinke and The New York Pops for a one-night-only program that highlights their careers on stage, including selections from Anything GoesKiss Me, KateThe Music Man; and The King and I.


JUAN DIEGO FLÓREZ, Tenor VINCENZO SCALERA, Piano Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Acclaimed tenor Juan Diego Flórez performs selections by Donizetti, Puccini, Rossini, Verdi, and others with pianist Vincenzo Scalera.


LES VIOLONS DU ROY Thursday, November 30, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Zankel Hall) Les Violons du Roy return for their first performance at the Hall with Music Director and Conductor Jonathan Cohen. Cohen leads the chamber ensemble in music by Vivaldi, Boccherini, Purcell, Bach, Rameau, and others in a performance that features classical guitarist Miloš.


STAATSKAPELLE BERLIN Wednesday, November 30, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) In his first Carnegie Hall appearances since 2018, Music Director Daniel Barenboim leads the Staatskapelle Berlin in a complete Brahms symphony cycle over two nights. For the first of the two concerts, the orchestra performs Symphony No. 2—Brahms’s personal favorite—followed by the heroic Symphony No. 1.
