Carnegie Hall December 2023 Calendar

STAATSKAPELLE BERLIN Friday, December 1, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) In his first Carnegie Hall appearances since 2018, Music Director Daniel Barenboim leads the Staatskapelle Berlin in a complete Brahms symphony cycle over two nights. On their second evening at the Hall, the ensemble presents Brahms's Third and Fourth symphonies.


SŌ PERCUSSION Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 9:00 PM (Zankel Hall) Sō Percussion returns with three premieres: Angélica Negrón’s Inward PiecesVijay Iyer’s Dharma-Eye featuring the composer on piano and Milena Casado on trumpet (co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall); and Olivier Tarpaga’s Fē Fē featuring the composer on percussion (co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall). The program is completed by Sō member Jason Treuting’s Go Placidly with Haste.


A WELL-BEING CONCERT: JOSHUA ROMAN Sunday, December 3, 2023 at 6:00 PM (Resnick Education Wing) Find musical amazement and self-care encouragement in a Well-Being Concert with the inspiring cellist Joshua Roman. Celebrated for his “playful zest for exploration” (The New York Times) and “contagious enthusiasm for musical evolution” (Seattle Times), Roman is a TED Senior Fellow (and hit performer at the TED Conference) who became the Seattle Symphony’s youngest principal player at age 22. A prolific and eclectic solo career has now taken him around the world and included collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, DJ Spooky, Somi, Anna Deveare Smith, and numerous top orchestras. Audience members can choose from a variety of casual and comfortable seating options, with mats, cushions, and chairs all available on a first-come, first-served basis.

DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER AND SEAN JONES WITH NYO JAZZ ALL-STARS Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Carnegie Halland the United Nations, through UNITAR, continue a decades-long tradition of presenting celebrated performances that bring people together through music. This special collaboration in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights features NEA Jazz Master Dee Dee Bridgewater, renowned bandleader and trumpeter Sean Jones, and an all-star lineup of musicians and alums from Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz national youth ensemble, including some extremely exciting young professionals. Experience the breadth, vibrancy, and ongoing impact of big-band jazz at Carnegie Hall.


ORCHESTRA OF ST. LUKE’S Thursday, December 7, 2023 at 7:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Principal Conductor Bernard Labadie leads New York City’s beloved Orchestra of St. Luke’s in J. S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. The performance features soprano Lauren Snouffer, contralto Avery Amereau, tenor Andrew Haji, and baritone Joshua Hopkins, along with La Chapelle de Québec.


A WELL-BEING CONCERT: ANTHONY ROTH COSTANZO BRYAN WAGORN Friday, December 8, 2023 at 6:30 PM (Resnick Education Wing) Grammy Award–winning countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo is a superstar singer known for leading roles at The Metropolitan Opera, top concert halls, and much more. In this intimate and welcoming performance in Carnegie Hall’s Resnick Education Wing, he joins pianist Bryan Wagorn in a Well-Being Concert that invites audiences to join the artists in a communal experience, encouraging mindfulness, self-care, and personal nourishment through music. Audience members can choose from a variety of casual and comfortable seating options, with mats, cushions, and chairs all available on a first-come, first-served basis.


THE ENGLISH CONCERT Sunday, December 10, 2023 at 2:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) As part of their multi-year Handel project at Carnegie Hall, Artistic Director Harry Bicket leads The English Concert in the first full concert performance of Handel’s Rodelinda at the Hall in more than 50 years. The performance features soprano Lucy Crowe as Rodelinda and countertenor Iestyn Davies as Bertarido.


THE MET ORCHESTRA CHAMBER ENSEMBLE Monday, December 11, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Weill Recital Hall) Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard opens the second of six Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble concerts this season with a performance of Chausson’s Chanson perpétuelle, joined by Yannick Nézet-Séguin on piano. The program follows with works by Ravel, Beach, James Lee III, and Andy Akiho, plus Justinian Tamusuza’s Ekitundu Ekisooka, with a special appearance by Quamaine “Virtuoso” Daniy’Els, pioneer and innovator of the FLEXN dance style.


DANIIL TRIFONOV, Piano Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Acclaimed pianist Danill Trifonov offers a program to include Rameau’s Suite in A Minor from Nouvelles suites de pièces de clavecin, Mozart’s Piano Sonata in F Major, K. 332; Felix Mendelssohn’s Variations sérieuses, and Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 29 in B-flat Major, Op. 106, “Hammerklavier.” This performance will be heard live by listeners around the world, as part of the thirteenth annual Carnegie Hall Live broadcast and digital series. Produced by WQXR and Carnegie Hall and co-hosted by WQXR’s Jeff Spurgeon and WNYC’s John Schaefer the concert will be broadcast on WQXR 105.9 FM in New York and streamed online at wqxr.org and carnegiehall.org/wqxr.


MICHAEL FEINSTEIN AND JEAN-YVES THIBAUDET Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Singer Michael Feinstein and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet come together for Two Pianos: Who Can Ask for Anything More?, an evening that celebrates the music of George Gershwin with newly arranged piano duos and more. From beloved songs to lesser-known gems, the program sheds new light on the composer, including an original fantasy created by the artists that nods to Rhapsody in Blue—the first of a series of concerts at the Hall that celebrates the centennial of this groundbreaking work—plus music by Gershwin contemporaries and successors.


THE NEW YORK POPS Friday, December 22, 2023 at 8:00 PM Saturday, December 23, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) The New York Pops’ annual holiday tradition returns for two merry nights of classic carols, contemporary favorites, and other surprises led by Music Director Steve Reineke and featuring Tony nominee Norm Lewis and Judith Clurman’s Essential Voices USA.


NEW YORK STRING ORCHESTRA Sunday, December 24, 2023 at 7:00 PM Thursday, December 28, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) The New York String Orchestra returns for its annual December concerts conducted by Jaime Laredo. On Christmas Eve, the orchestra presents an all-Mozart program featuring two NYSO alums: violinist Bella Hristova and violist Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt. The group’s second concert includes Nokuthula Ngwenyama’s Primal Message for String Orchestra, Harp, and Percussion; Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto featuring Anna Polonsky; and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7.
