Tuesday, November 15, 2022 7:30 PM Weill Recital Hall

Due to a delay in visa processing, pianist Schaghajegh Nosrati must regrettably cancel her recital. Her Carnegie Hall debut will be rescheduled as part of a future concert season.Concertgoers who purchased tickets by credit card will receive automatic refunds. Those who purchased tickets with cash should return their tickets to the Box Office at 57th Street and Seventh Avenue.

Schaghajegh Nosrati by Irene Zandel
Experience the Carnegie Hall debut of Schaghajegh Nosrati, a phenomenal pianist praised by Sir András Schiff for her “astonishing clarity, purity, and maturity.” The program opens with a spritely, light-fingered Haydn piano sonata, followed by Bach’s Partita No. 6. The partita is one of Bach’s great keyboard works and an exciting inclusion in this concert, as “Nosrati is a captivating Bachian; rhythmically infectious, supremely intelligent” (BBC Music Magazine). The second half of the program comprises Alkan’s masterpiece, the Concerto for Solo Piano, a stupendously difficult work that thrills across its feverishly exuberant twists and turns.

At a Glance

HAYDN  Piano Sonata in E Minor, Hob. XVI: 34

Although most concertgoers associate Haydn more readily with symphonies and string quartets than with keyboard music, he wrote dozens of masterful sonatas and other works for both harpsichord and piano. Many are well within the reach of amateur players, but the spitfire passagework of this delightful sonata suggests that it was written for a seasoned performer.

J. S. BACH  Partita No. 6 in E Minor, BWV 830

Among Bach’s greatest works in suite form, his six partitas make considerably great demands on both player and listener. But despite the music’s technical difficulty, the composer disarmingly advertised the partitas as “galanteries, composed for music lovers, to refresh their spirits.”

ALKAN  Concerto for Solo Piano from 12 Studies in the Minor Keys, Op. 39, Nos. 8–10

A friend and contemporary of Chopin and Liszt, Charles-Valentin Alkan and his music were largely forgotten until after his death in 1888. The reclusive French composer-pianist, however, was hailed as a musical visionary by fellow progressives like Ferruccio Busoni and Egon Petri. The latter’s 1939 BBC Radio broadcast of the long and ferociously virtuosic Concerto for Solo Piano helped spark the modern Alkan revival.
