Conrad Tao, Piano

Friday, January 31, 2025 7:30 PM Zankel Hall Center Stage
Conrad Tao by Brantley Gutierrez
Conrad Tao performs the type of boldly imaginative program that has critics calling him “the kind of musician who is shaping the future of classical music” (New York Magazine). The concert is bookended by Debussy’s 12 Études, late masterpieces described by the composer as a musical dare: “a useful warning to pianists not to take up the musical profession unless they have remarkable hands.” In Tao’s hands, however, physical hurdles become virtuosic possibilities, and architectural fixations transcend into pure musicality. Tao’s Keyed In is a thunderous, original exploration of the piano’s resonances and overtones, and the sonic explorations continue in works arranged and improvised on the Lumatone—a technologically advanced, multi-tonal keyboard controller of vast potential.
