About the Album

Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz proudly unveils Live in Johannesburg, the ensemble’s second full-length album and first live recording—a dynamic celebration of jazz as a universal language. Recorded at The Market Theatre, one of South Africa’s most historic venues, this vibrant collection captures the energy and artistry of 22 of the most gifted, young jazz musicians from across the US, under the direction of renowned trumpeter and bandleader Sean Jones. Featuring the dynamic vocals of Alicia Olatuja and special guest appearances by South African bassist Romy Brauteseth and saxophonist Linda Sikhakhane, the album highlights the power of musical exchange between cultures.

Blending big-band classics with fresh arrangements and contemporary compositions, Live in Johannesburg includes standout performances, including Billy Childs’s “Rejoice,” the Afrobeat-infused “Kadara” featuring Olatuja, and a moving interpretation of “A Time for Love” featuring Jones. A centerpiece of the album is ISIGQI SUITE, a Carnegie Hall–commissioned work by South African composer Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane that celebrates the country’s rich jazz tradition.

Recorded during NYO Jazz’s debut tour to South Africa in 2024, Live in Johannesburg reflects the spirit of connection and transformation that defined the ensemble’s performances. The album stands as a testament to jazz’s ability to bridge cultures, inspire audiences, and shape the future.

the future of big-band jazz assuredly rests in capable hands ... a colorful snapshot of NYO at its best.
