Suggested Interactive Performance Structure for a 45-Minute Presentation

Short Performance (2 minutes)

 

Introductions (5 minutes)

  • Each musician briefly introduces themself and their instrument and includes a short solo performance.
  • Musician introductions should be relevant to the entry point and line of inquiry of the Interactive Performance.

Listening Activity No. 1 (3 minutes)

  • broadly introduces the entry point and line of inquiry
  • prepares the audience for Listening Example No. 1

Listening Example No. 1 (3 minutes)

  • is preceded by one clear listening question, directive, or challenge that illuminates the line of inquiry
  • is followed by a reflection question (about 1 minute)
    a. Collect answers from the audience about the listening question or challenge.
    b. Review what has been learned in Listening Activity No. 1.

Listening Activity No. 2 (4 minutes)

  • scaffolds the challenge to be slightly more difficult than Listening Activity No. 1
  • engages a different learning style
  • prepares the audience for Listening Example No. 2

Listening Example No. 2 (5 minutes)

  • is preceded by one clear listening question, directive, or challenge that illuminates the line of inquiry
  • is followed by a reflection question (1 minute)
    a. Collect answers from the audience about the listening question or challenge.
    b. Review what has been discussed and learned in Listening Example No. 2.

Listening Activity No. 3 (6 minutes)

  • scaffolds the challenge to be slightly more difficult than Listening Activity No. 2
  • incorporates opportunities for creative choices by the audience
  • prepares audience for Listening Example No. 3

Listening Example No. 3 (6 minutes)

  • is the culminating listening experience of the program
  • is preceded by the most challenging listening question, directive, or challenge that illuminates the line of inquiry

Reflection and Recap (4 minutes)

  • Collect answers from the culminating listening.
  • Review what has been learned throughout the Interactive Performance.
  • Summarize your line of inquiry.
  • Translate the themes of the Interactive Performance into relevant and active takeaways for your audience.

Questions and Answers (5 minutes)

  • gives your audience the opportunity to ask general questions about the performance or performers on stage
